Abstract: Amazing Grace: Stories of Personal Transformation from Slavery to the Present Day is based on a script originated by Mary K. Makoski and Thelma Khelgati. Changes in content have been made without compromising the intent of the creators.
This presentation depicts various people who found what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. referred to as “somebodiness” and transformed their own lives and in turn, the lives of others. That sense of “somebodiness” is essential to each individual’s ability to transcend life’s challenges. Without first feeling one is somebody, personal transformation isn’t possible.
Note: the text of Sojourner Truth’s speech used here was transcribed by reporter Marius Robinson who was present when she spoke. He showed it to her and she approved it for publication. You’ll be surprised to note that nowhere in the original speech does she ever ask, “Ain’t I a Woman?”
